Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession (Unison)

Lord, the Pentecost story falls on our ears as such a peculiar story! And we confess that our reaction convicts us. We know too little about being filled with the Spirit, and do not trust ourselves to be recipients of such a holy gift. Offered a vision of your heavenly glory, we prefer what is earthbound and familiar. Inspired, we too quickly fade. Lifted up, we want to stay put. Blessed ourselves, we resist the responsibility of being a blessing to others.  Entrusted with your gospel, we are too timid to testify. Forgive us, we pray, and give us the time and courage we need to fully amend our lives.

A period of silence is observed for personal confession.

Hymn 565                           Lord Have Mercy                  KYRIE

              Lord have mercy,

              Christ, have mercy.

              Lord, have mercy

Passing of the Peace: …I beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling… eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called into the one hope… one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all…       Ephesians 4:1-4

Anthem                            Canticle to the Spirit                    Lloyd Larson

O Spirit of the Living God, true Light and Fire divine, descend upon the church once more, and make it truly Thine. Fill her with love, with joy and power, with righteousness and peace, till Christ shall dwell in human hearts, till sin and sorrow cease. Blow, Wind of God, with wisdom blow until our minds are free, free us from the clouds of doubt which blind our eyes to Thee. Burn, Holy Fire, inspire our lips with flaming love and zeal to preach to all the great good new, God’s glorious love reveal. Teach us to speak Your living word of truth that all may hear the language all may understand when love speaks loud and clear, till those of every age and race shall blend their creeds in one, and earth shall form one family by whom God’s will is done. Amen.    –Henry H. Tweedy (1868-1953)

Affirmation of Faith                                     From:  A Brief Statement of Faith

We trust in God the Holy Spirit,
everywhere the giver and renewer of life.
The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith,
sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor,
and binds us together with all believers
in the one body of Christ, the church.
   The same Spirit
who inspired the prophets and apostles
rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture,
engages us through the Word proclaimed,
claims us in the waters of baptism,
feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation,
and calls women and men to all ministries of the church.
In a broken and fearful world
   the Spirit gives us courage
      to pray without ceasing,
to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior,
to unmask idolatries in church and culture,
to hear the voices of peoples long silenced,
and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace.
In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit,
we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks
and to live holy and joyful lives,
even as we watch for God's new heaven and new earth,
       praying, Come, Lord Jesus!

NEW ADULT CLASSES The Old Testament from Scratch in Fellowship Hall: This class provides an overview of the Hebrew Bible which allows us to put stories of the Old Testament together to see the “big picture” of salvation history.   Also, The Interaction of Science and Religion Through the Centuries in the Conference Room: A DVD-based course with classes lead by Dr. Dudley Bryant (physics), Dr. Rodney King (biology), and Dr. Warren Campbell (civil engineering) who will provide some scientific context for each lesson.

SIGN-IN SHEETS IN PEW PADS are vitally important in the ministry of this church. Please do not forget to sign your name, address and any change in phone number or e-mail address. Also, be certain that a visitor on your pew is given the opportunity to sign so that the office may send a welcoming letter.

LECTIONARY FOR NEXT SUNDAY, May 18: Genesis 1:1-2:4a; Psalm 8:1-9; 2 Corinthians 13:11-13; Matthew 28:16-20.

THE YOUTH GROUP WILL NOT BE MEETING today.  We will resume next week with visiting artists Angie Alexieff, Rita Rudloff, and Susan Webb.  We will be working on pieces for the Youth Art Show opening in September in our Fellowship Hall.  Come prepared to be messy!  We will meet at our usual time, 5-7pm in the youth room.  Dinner will be served.  Bring a friend!

Mondays

MONDAY AFTERNOON WITH THE ARTS will not meet again until May 19th.

Fridays

Morning Prayer will continue held each Friday at ten in the morning in the 10th Street Parlor.  We will use two different kinds of prayer practices that we have been/will be learning together:  Lectio Divina and Centering Prayer.  If you are new to these ancient spiritual practices you are not alone—this is a brand new thing to most of us.  Come and learn and grow closer to God through prayer.  Hot tea will be served and candles lit!

WHEN YOU LEAVE ANY ROOM in our church which has a sink, please make sure all faucets are turned off. This past Saturday a faucet was found running in the restroom on the top floor. Thank you for being extra attentive.

Please feel free to bring your lunch.  Tea, milk, and juice will be available. Please e-mail Rebecca Simpson if you have any questions:  simpsonrebecca@bellsouth.net
