Call to Worship
Leader: Jesus said, “John baptized with water, but you will be
baptized with the Holy Spirit...”
People: And we wait, to be clothed with power from on high!
Leader: At Pentecost, the sound of rushing wind was heard;
People: Sweeping away the divisions between people.
Leader: It was the Holy Spirit of God filling the house.
People: Reversing the curse of Babel; giving voice to the gospel
message.
Leader: Come Holy Spirit!
People: With power from above.
Leader: Come Holy Spirit!
People: With understanding.
Leader: Come Holy Spirit!
People: That we may speak to others about what we believe.

Call to Confession
Prayer of Confession (Unison)
Lord, the Pentecost story falls on our ears as such a peculiar story! And we confess that our reaction convicts us. We know too little about being filled with the Spirit, and do not trust ourselves to be recipients of such a holy gift. Offered a vision of your heavenly glory, we prefer what is earthbound and familiar. Inspired, we too quickly fade. Lifted up, we want to stay put. Blessed ourselves, we resist the responsibility of being a blessing to others. Entrusted with your gospel, we are too timid to testify. Forgive us, we pray, and give us the time and courage we need to fully amend our lives.
A period of silence is observed for personal confession.
Hymn 565 Lord Have Mercy KYRIE
Lord have mercy,
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy

A Curse Reversed at Pentecost
Anthem Canticle to the Spirit Lloyd Larson
O Spirit of the Living God, true Light and Fire divine, descend upon the church once more, and make it truly Thine. Fill her with love, with joy and power, with righteousness and peace, till Christ shall dwell in human hearts, till sin and sorrow cease. Blow, Wind of God, with wisdom blow until our minds are free, free us from the clouds of doubt which blind our eyes to Thee. Burn, Holy Fire, inspire our lips with flaming love and zeal to preach to all the great good new, God’s glorious love reveal. Teach us to speak Your living word of truth that all may hear the language all may understand when love speaks loud and clear, till those of every age and race shall blend their creeds in one, and earth shall form one family by whom God’s will is done. Amen. –Henry H. Tweedy (1868-1953)

Affirmation of Faith From: A Brief Statement of Faith
We trust in God the Holy
Spirit,
everywhere the giver and renewer of life.
The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith,
sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor,
and binds us together with all believers
in the one body of Christ, the church.
The same Spirit
who inspired the prophets and apostles
rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture,
engages us through the Word proclaimed,
claims us in the waters of baptism,
feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation,
and calls women and men to all ministries of the church.
In a broken and fearful world
the Spirit gives us courage
to pray without ceasing,
to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior,
to unmask idolatries in church and culture,
to hear the voices of peoples long silenced,
and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace.
In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit,
we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks
and to live holy and joyful lives,
even as we watch for God's new heaven and new earth,
praying, Come, Lord Jesus!

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL JUNE 8-12th This summer, June 8-12, our church will once again join with Christ Episcopal Church to create a Vacation Bible School Holyland Adventure for the youth of our community. Our church is hosting VBS this year, and many volunteers are needed. To learn how you can contribute to this exciting learning experience for our children, please contact VBS Director, Rebecca Simpson, by email at simpsonrebecca@bellsouth.net, or by phone at 796-4953. Shalom!

SIGN UP FOR MONTREAT A group is going to Montreat, North Carolina July 12-19th. We have our own house and still a few spots available. Registration is confirmed with a $100 deposit. All rising 9th graders through graduating 12th are encouraged to participate in this memorable experience.
WHEN YOU LEAVE ANY ROOM in our church which has a sink, please make sure all faucets are turned off. This past Saturday a faucet was found running in the restroom on the top floor. On Election Day (Tuesday, May 20th) we will be having a VBS meeting in the Fellowship Hall at 11:30 a.m. Child care will be provided. Please feel free to bring your lunch. Tea, milk, and juice will be available. Please e-mail Rebecca Simpson if you have any questions: simpsonrebecca@bellsouth.net
